What you can build with this

Open-source community intelligence

Mastodon is where open-source developers hang out. Scrape Fosstodon, Hachyderm, and tech instances to find potential users, contributors, and advocates for your tools.

Privacy-focused audience research

Mastodon users tend to be privacy-conscious tech professionals — a valuable demographic. Understand their preferences and pain points for targeted messaging.

Decentralized trend monitoring

Track hashtags across the entire fediverse. Unlike centralized platforms, trends on Mastodon reflect genuine community interest, not algorithmic amplification.

Instance-level market sizing

Analyze instance user counts, activity levels, and growth rates to identify which communities are gaining momentum in your industry.

Things to know

!

Each Mastodon instance has its own API rate limits (typically 300 req/5min). When scraping across many instances, distribute requests to avoid hitting individual instance limits.

!

Instance operators can block scraping. Some instances have strict rules against automated access. Check instance rules before scraping.

!

Mastodon supports content warnings (CW). Posts behind CW tags still contain data but may be sensitive. Handle CW content appropriately.

Common questions

Mastodon instances expose a public API by design (compatible with the Mastodon/ActivityPub specification). Accessing public toots through the API is generally permissible. However, each instance has its own terms — check instance rules before large-scale scraping. Always respect rate limits and content warnings.
Many Mastodon API endpoints work without authentication for public data. However, authenticated access gives higher rate limits. The Apify actor handles authentication automatically. You only need one Mastodon account, not accounts on every instance.
No single API covers all instances. The scraper queries instances individually. Focus on the most relevant instances for your use case — the top 10-20 instances cover the majority of active users in most niches.
Mastodon has a much smaller but more engaged user base. It's particularly strong in tech, open-source, journalism, and academic communities. Conversations tend to be higher quality with less noise. For B2B tech, Mastodon data can be more valuable per-user than Twitter data.
Local timelines show posts from the instance only. Federated timelines show posts from other instances that instance users follow. For comprehensive scraping, target specific users or hashtags rather than timelines, as timelines are instance-specific and incomplete.
